Chapter 6 project

BACKGROUND To Europeans in the Age of Imperialism, conquering countries in other parts of
the world was seen as a way to increase European power as well as a way to spread religion and culture to new places. For the people living in the conquered lands, imperialism was viewed less favorably. They already had their own religion and cul- ture, and many people did not want to adopt those of the Europeans.

TASK You and a small group (Group is defined as up to 4 people) of your classmates have been asked to create a keynote for the student showcase that explores the topic of European and American imperialism in Asia, Africa, and Latin America from 1800 to 1914. Your keynote should include many different media, such as maps, captions, political cartoons, charts, graphs, artwork, letters, and journals.

PURPOSE The purpose of your keynote is to present European and American imperialism in Asia, Africa, and Latin America from two vantage points: the view of the conquerors and the view of the conquered. As a result, half of the material you include should present the European and American defense of imperialism: it helped create strong markets, build national power, and spread religion and culture. The other half should show how imperialism weakened the political, economic, and social structure of the conquered nations.

PROCEDURES


  1. Restate the assignment in your own words.
  2. Summarize what you know about imperialism from 1800 to 1914.
  3. List what you want to include in the keynote.
  4. Sketch the layout.
  5. Be sure everything supports the purpose and is directed to your audience.
  6. Prepare a task and time management plan to allocate tasks to each group member.
  7. Research any additional information you need.
  8. Select and create material to include on the bulletin board.
  9. Construct the keynote.
  10. Present the keynote to your audience.

Use of Library of Congress Images

When material form the Library’s collections is reproduced in a publication or website or otherwise distributed, the Library requests the courtesy of a credit line.

Ideally, the credit will include

reference to Library of Congress, and
the specific collection which includes the image, and
the image reproduction number (negative, transparency, or digital id number).
Such a credit furthers scholarship by helping researchers locate material and acknowledges the contribution made by the Library of Congress.

Example:

When space considerations preclude such a caption, shorter versions may be used.

· They are shot-based as opposed to scene based dramatic films
· A story with a beginning, middle and end
· A real place, time, event, people etc.
· A narrator is often used either on camera or in voice-over that carries the story and adds interpretation to what the audience sees and hears
· Interviews with people involved in the story add authensity and individual points of view
· Shots from specific places or events that either carry the story visually or embellish what the interviewee or narrator is talking about
· A point of view

Documentary assignment

your documentary should be in the "Ken Burns" style discussed in class
the minimum length is 2 minutes not including title or credits
you must have a minimum of 12 images
you must have a title and credits (credits discussed later)
you must be the voice tallent for the naration
you must have 5 "authentic" sources - those not including wiki type sources
any music you use must be royalty free

CREDITS
each image in iMovie must have a caption for the citation
use keynote to create your credits
credits are to be in chronological order of apearance
your credit slide must have
  • a title
  • the image
  • the image citation
  • citations for the information shared
these slides are put at the end of your documentary
either as a video, or images

PROJECT DUE November 30th / December 1

theme: "It did not happen yesterday or even the day before but a long time ago..."

Write a first person account of a historical event (click here for help) you may choose any event between 3000BC and 1800AD if it is in the book or not. You also have three project choices

1) essay
• Essay length: 300 - 400 typewritten words.
• You must write your own essay.
• All essays should be typewritten in English with no color or graphics and cannot be less than 300 words or greater than 400 words in length.
(Essays under or over these word amounts will be scored zero.) Every word is counted regardless of length.
The essay title (theme) or added footnotes do not contribute to the word count.

use iMovie/Grage Band/Keynote or a combination of them
you giving your story (first person of the event) you must have images
and when you do the credits be sure to source all of your images

knowledge of the theme is worth 30 points:
You must show a thorough knowledge of the theme in your work.
Demonstrate you have researched the issue extensively.

Content is worth 35 points:
Clearly express your ideas in an organized manner.
Fully develop your theme and use transitions to move smoothly from one idea to the other.
